Breathing: The Secret Power Within You
LIFESTYLE – Breathing is something we do roughly 20,000 times a day without a second thought. Yet, when done intentionally, it holds the power to transform our lives. For years, I took my breath for granted, assuming it was just an automatic process, like blinking or a heartbeat. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon the Wim Hof breathing method during a particularly stressful period in my life that I realized how life-changing conscious breathing could be.
My days are often filled with a constant stream of responsibilities, something you might relate to yourself. My mind races from one task to the next, and sometimes I wake up already feeling drained. I already incorporate common stress-relief methods like exercise, better sleep habits and meditation.
B.K.S. Iyengar"The mind is the king of the senses, but the breath is the king of the mind."
While they’re already very helpful and essential for me, I always stay open to discovering new ways to enhance the quality of my life. Then I came across Rajshree Patel’s book, “The Power of Vital Force” and it immediately intrigued me with its emphasis on the transformative power of breath. It describes the idea of controlled breathing, a practice said to calm the mind and energize the body in just minutes.
There are a lot of different breathing techniques, each offering unique benefits depending on what you’re looking for. You might have heard of Wim Hof, whose method has gained worldwide recognition, with plenty of guided breathing exercises available on YouTube.
From his intense, energizing breaths to more calming practices like box breathing or alternate nostril breathing, there’s a technique to suit every need. It’s all about finding the one that resonates with you and fits best into your lifestyle. Every morning, I dedicate just 10 minutes to this guided breathing exercise, it’s a simple yet powerful start to my day!

The Sensations I Experience During and After Breathing
The first time I sat down to consciously focus on my breath, it feels strange, almost unnatural. I followed the rhythm: deep inhales, intentional exhales and breath holds. As I do, I began to notice subtle changes. A wave of calm washes over me, like my body is exhaling a long-held sigh of relief.
Everytime I do a breathing practice, I feel tingling sensations in my hands and feet, which I now understand is a sign of increased oxygen circulation. Sometimes, I feel light-headed but in a pleasant, almost meditative way. Afterward, my entire body feels alive, my mind is sharp, and my mood is noticeably brighter.
Science explains these sensations as the body’s response to hyperventilation and breath-holding, which temporarily alter the blood’s pH levels and trigger physiological responses that enhance circulation and energy production. I feel completely relaxed and for the first time in a long while, I feel alive and full of energy.

The Benefits of Daily Breathing Exercises
Since I started practicing this simple but powerful Wim Hof breathing excercise every morning, my life has improved in many ways. Here are the benefits I’ve noticed:
Increased energy
After my 10-minute session, I feel like I have much more energy to be active. Essential for me to get everything out of my day.
Improved focus and clarity
These exercises clear away mental fog and help me stay productive throughout the day. Especially remarkable effective for someone with AD(H)D!
Reduced stress
Deep breathing lowers my cortisol levels, leaving me calm and centered even on hectic days.
Better emotional regulation
I’m less reactive and more patient in challenging situations.
Enhanced physical resilience
I’ve noticed fewer colds and faster recovery from workouts, thanks to the immune-boosting effects of breathing exercises.
These benefits are not just my subjective experience, they’re backed by science. Research shows that breath techniques can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift from “fight or flight” to “rest and digest.” This physiological response lowers heart rate, reduces stress hormones, and promotes overall well-being.

4 Scientific Facts You Should Know About Breathing
Taking intentional breaths is more than just inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. It’s a tool that directly influences our nervous system, immune response and even brain function.
1. Stress Reduction
Deep breathing activates the vagus nerve, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. This leads to a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure, helping the body relax.
2. Improved Brain Function
Controlled breathing increases oxygen levels in the blood, which boosts brain performance and concentration.
3. Immune System Boost
Studies on the Wim Hof Method have shown that it can help reduce inflammation and improve the body’s immune response to infections.
4. Emotional Regulation
Breathing influences the amygdala, the brain’s fear center, helping you manage emotions more effectively.

Breathing and Spirituality
Breathing is a gateway to deeper spiritual connection. In yoga, the breath is referred to as “prana,” or life force and is believed to connect us to the universe.
When breathing intentionally, it feels like more than just a physical act. It becomes a form of meditation: a chance to be fully present and grounded. You could experience a profound sense of unity, like tapping into something greater than ourselves.
Many spiritual traditions emphasize the importance of breath as a tool for mindfulness and enlightenment. Whether you believe in the spiritual aspect or not, there’s no denying that conscious breathing stimulates a sense of peace and presence.

- Breathe deeply. Inhale fully through your nose and exhale gently through your mouth. Repeat this 30 times.
- Hold your breath. After the last exhale, hold your breath for as long as you can without discomfort.
